Iban at longhouse dancing Ngajat

Photograph showing a man dressed a wrap skirt and feathered collar and wearing a feathered headdress. He holds a straight sword in his right hand. Behind him, people are watching his performance. Woven cloth (probably ikat) has been hung from a cord to form a backdrop. The dancer and his audience are probably in an Iban longhouse.

The Ngajat dance is now staged solely as a tourist attraction. Although native to the Iban, their assimilation with other tribes has led to changes in the dance. For instance, the sword being usd in this performance was of a type traditionally used by the Kelabit, Kenah and Kayan peoples, and not used by the Iban.Photograph by Hedda Morrison, circa 1952.
