Old Fire fighter Station in Kuching

Balai Bomba Kuching / Kuching Fire Station ( Circa 1938) At the end of 19th century,Kuching has already hav etheir own firefighter team,Government then has introduced a coal-powered fire-fighting equipment from the UK and built a fire-fighting department on han street. The Humble Fire Department building is 2-story high, with a view tower of about 20 meters, which is said to be the tallest building in Kuching. Firefighters just need to climb to the top of the tower and look, they can easily witness the fire site, and then go to the location.

Nearly 40 years after its opening, the small fire department was unable to cope with the rapid development of the city, and the Kuching City Council has set up an open space by the Kuching City Council, and a brand new fire station.(now at Padungan)

This old Fire Station then demolished in middle of 1950's and only the tower remain until today as you can see in open air.The building beside this Fire Station is Kuching Power Station.Hence this road was name as Jalan Power. That building also demolished on later years and now a site for Electra House.

Old Kuching Photo : Old shophouses near Open Air

This photo was an old photo, taken circa 1960's from open Air Market Kuching.(You can see it's 60's from the car shown in the photo). This building still available today (2012).But who knows ,one day all of this will be demolished to make way for development. In my humble opinion, building with historical value and share with people from early day of the place(like this building),should be retain and keep it in a good condition for view of next generation.
As from this photo from 1960's,the building and surrounded area are still the same.Only a few demolition behind this building (Lebuh Jawa) where some of shop houses and Jetty demolished to make way  for Kuching Waterfront extension.
