The first Yang di-Pertua Negeri or Governor of Sarawak, Tun Abang Haji Openg Abang Sapie’e was born on 7 October 1905
He started his early education at the Government Malay School in Kuching before continuing his studies at St. Anthony, Sarikei and St. Anthony's Night School. Thomas, Kuching.
He started his career as a clerk in a government department in November 1942.
He has held several important positions since then.
Among them are as a Member of the Supreme Council, Member of the Examination Body for Government Officials, Superintendent of Prisons and President of the Sarawak Islamic Religious Council.
Openg retired from government service in September, 1951 and was appointed President of the Sarawak Islamic Council until he was officially appointed the first Governor of Sarawak in Malaysia on 13 September 1963.
On 28 March 1969, Tun Abang Haji Openg Abang Sapi’ee, the first Governor of Sarawak in Malaysia returned to rahmatullah in Astana, Kuching.
He breathed his last at 10.30 pm after being ill for some time. He leaves a widow of Dayang Masniah Abang Haji Abdul Rahman and ten children.
The deceased's body was brought from Astana, crossed the river by ferry to be buried at the State Mosque Cemetery, Kuching.
Also present to pay their last respects were the Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, Minister of Postal Works and Talikom, Chief Ministers, Federal Minister for Sarawak, Cabinet Ministers, dignitaries and the people of Sarawak.
