The Tanah Puteh Port built in 1961 was to remove shipping down river from the Sarawak Steamship Wharf and Ban Hock Wharf which had become inadequate for increased shiipping tonnage by that time. The Tanah Puteh Port with longer wharf space allowed up to 4 ships to berth at the same time and bigger godowns to store more cargoes and weigh-bridges to weigh lorries going in and out.
When Pending Port opened in the 1980's it was used simultaneously with Tanah Puteh Port so there was no waiting time for ships to berth. The bigger ships berthed at Pending and the smaller ones went to Tanah Puteh via the winding Sarawak river further away. The Senari Port was built to handle container ships especially (and cruise ships) and Pending could at last replace Tanah Puteh as its handling operation was quite similar.
This port totally demolished sometimes in 1998 to give way a new bridge which known as Tun Salahuddin Bridge today.. Only two jetty from this port can be seen until today ( November 2020). The jetty mostly use by angler, try their luck there.
