Selain Kedai Kek lapis Dayang salhah,banyak lagi kedai kek lapis yang tumbuh seperti cendawan selepas hujan di sekitar Kampung Boyan dan Kampung Gersik,pilihan adalah di tangan pengguna.Lain orang mungkin mempunyai lain citarasanya namun begitu Kedai Kek Lapis Dayang Salhah masih lagi mempunyai peminat dan penyokong yang setia.Kalau ke kuching,jangan lupa singgah di sini..ok..

Reminiscing the once vibrant Electra House

For more than 15 years, Bujang Keri had been rendering his cobbler service on the sidewalks opposite the Electra House.

And he continues to do this till today despite his friends coaxing him to relocate for better business as the number of people visiting the city centre decreases day by day.

“Why should I move? I still believe people need to pass by this place to get to their destination. It’s the city centre,” he told The Star yesterday.

Recalling the days when he first started out as a cobbler, he said people from all parts of the city would congregate particularly at the Electra House before moving off elsewhere.

This prompted him to set up base on the sidewalks there.

“Since it was the first multi-storey shopping complex the city had at that time, it was a landmark for all. When you want to meet with friends at the city’s centre, all you have to say is ‘meet at Electra House’,” he said.

The 63-year-old who hails from Rampangi said it was ‘the’ place for all to come to and shop at as it graced the city’s skyline and the people were just fascinated by it.

“Electra House served as the place where the urban and the rural people from the ‘kampungs’ met and because it attracted the crowd, I began my cobbler services here,” he said.

Sharing his sentiments was retired police personnel David Jalil, 60, who used to ‘hang out’ at Electra House during his bachelor days.

“There were just so many things and events taking place at Electra House since the buses stopped in front. Even during the riot in 1969, the police had a booth at Electra House to recruit more policemen.

“Which was only logical since that’s where you got the crowd and the police training school was just across the river (Sungai Sarawak),” he said.

Back in those days, he said people who travelled to Singapore often likened the Electra House area to Rochar Centre.

Nevertheless, he said the building also witnessed many unwanted incidence like fights.

“Kuching did not have many nightclubs in those days and one was called the ‘Hongkong cave’. It just so happened to be on the top floors so there was bound to have a fight or two. So Electra House has its stories to tell,” he said.

When asked if it was a good idea to have the place transformed into a hotel, David agreed.

“In those days, buildings were built to last and so was Electra House. If it is turned into a hotel, it would be good because tourists love to come to the rustic city centre. It will be convenient for them to live here too,” he added.

Berhampiran simpang ke Empangan Bakun di jalan Miri Bintulu..kalau di titik simpang ini,jarak ke bintulu adalah lebih dekat lagi jika dibandingkan dengan Jarak ke Miri,pekan yang terhampir adalah simpang batu Niah..Kedai makan dan stesen minyaknya beroperasi 24 jam.Namun tiada apa yang menarik yang dilihat berhampiran kawasan ini,kebanyakannya adalah Pokok Sawit,pokok sawit dan pokok sawit..ada juga rumah panjang di tepian jalan tapi tidak banyak..bagi sesiapa yang meminati cabaran terutama bagi yang bermotosikal ,anda dijemput untuk menunggang di Jalan ini.banyak yang dapat dipelajari dan bakal dilihat terutama bagi mereka yang dari luar Sarawak.

Brooke Dockyard

a not so old photo but part of this area a gone now and replaced with extension of Kuching waterfront.Brooke Dockyard,the dockyard that sound so historical because of the name "Brooke" soon will be demolish to, for another extension of Kuching waterfront.

Beside Brooke Dockyard,there use to be "lorong Dock" a very narrow street that have coffee stall,small shops selling rare household item,bundle, farmers selling their fresh produce like lemidin,terubok and others.Sarawak Transportation Bus Company also stop here where drivers and conductors rest for a while before their next trip..Now,all gone and its become part of another unwritten and unrecorded history of Kuching.

Kuching Rex old Cinema

A retro photo of Rex Cinema in Kuching, now the building replaced with Medan Pelita ,consisting of Food court and restaurant,multilevel Parking spaces and Cinema (Star Cineplex).

As far as i can remember the Rex building demolished sometimes early or middle 1990's,between 1992 to 1995.It was then when i was still in High school.During my childhood,my uncle used to bring me here and i can remember watching Superman.But it was that time,during cinema still become one of people entertainment,where television only have TV1 and TV2.

After revolution of television,cable tv,VCR,VCD and home entertainment.Cinema abandon and it happened to Rex,Capitol and many more Cinema in Kuching and other places too.The only old cinema left in Kuching now only Cathay near to Brooke dockyard..Only the building left and now become market.Sound funny but that's the fact,in near future that old building also will be demolish to give chance to development.

DBKU Manhole

Pemandangan yang biasa dilihat di Kuching terutama di kawasan DBKU.Penutup lubang di jalan -jalan baik di tepi jalanraya atau di belakang lorong kawasan Perumahan.Kebanyakkan penutub lubang ini ada jugak yang dah dicuri oleh pencuri besi,yalah masa harga besi melambung naik,semua barang yang dicuri termasuk penutup lubang ini pun dicuri.

Sebelum ini,penutup lubang ini hanyalah besi sahaja tanpa ada tanda tanda nama,tapi apabila kes kecurian besi semakin meningkat makanya DBKU turut melabel penutup ini dengan DBKU dan gambar Kucing..kenapa gambar kucing ?tak letak logo rasmi DBKU?? mungkin nak ringkas sahaja atau biarlah letak lukisan Kucing ni sebab bandaraya Kucing ni sememangnya dah terlalu sinonim dengan Kucing.

Bas bewarna Putih Kuning ini adalah dari Syarikat bas Petra Jaya Bus Company,Satu ketika dahulu Syarikat ini dikenali sebagai Bas Khalyubi.Sekitar 1990an,bas Petra Jaya pergi ke pelbagai destinasi dari Kawasan kampung Seberang hulu dan kampung Seberang Hilir di Petra Jaya,ke kawasan Matang,ke Kota samarahan,ke Santubong,Damai Beach,kampung Buntal,dan ke semariang.

Kawasan menunggu bas ini .Perhentian bas utamanya adalah berhadapan dengan Open Air Kuching (Berhadapan Electra House)

Namun sekarang yang diketahui oleh aku,destinasi bus ini hanya ke Bako.manakala yang lainnya dah "no service " lagi.. salah satu sebabnya ialah dengan wujudnya kereta sewa/van sewa(van dengan bahagian atasnya kuning) dan van sapu = pirate taxi.

Kenapa banyak bas kalah oleh kereta sewa/van sewa/van sapu ?? . Van ini siap menghantar ke hadapan rumah sekali dan kebiasaannya pemandu van adal;ah dari golongan setempat..dari kampung yang sama) memudahkan urusan perjalanan ke stau satu tempat tersebut.Di samping harga tambang yang tidak jauh berbeza.Namun kadang kadang ada juga masalah yang timbuil di mana ada pengusaha van yang :menangguk di air yang keruh",memandangkan tiada saingan lain untuk ke satu satu destinasi..misalnya ke kawasan yang jauh dari pusat bandar ..contohnya : Politeknik Kuching..ada pemandu yang mengenakan cas tambang yang diluar harga biasa.dan memandangkan tiada pilihan lain maka pengguna terpaksa membayar harga yang ditetapkan.

Tiada masalah menggunakan Van Sewa memandangkan ia bepermit dan penumpangnya dilindungi ansuran dan keselamatan seperti pengguna kenderaan awam lain,namun menggunakan "Van Sapu" = Pirate Taxi (bukan kereta lanun) adalah bertentangan dengan van sewa memandangkan pemilik dan pemandu van sapu ini beroperasi secara haram di mana tiada permit untuk membawa penumpang.keadaan van yang tidak diperiksa keselamatannya di mana ia membahayakan keselamatan penumpang yang menggunakan van tersebut.

Sebagai sebuah status bandaraya,maslah seperti sepatutnya dielakkan dan dikurangkan di mana sistem pengangkutan seharusnya dinaiktaraf untuk kemudahan pelbagai pihak.Kuala Lumpur sebagai contoh ,pada tahun 1980an dan awal 1990an di sana terdapat banyak BMW(Bas Mini wilayah) ,walaupun tambangnya murah tapi banyak wujud masalah.Sekarang BMW sudah menjadi sebahagian sejarah,sistem pengagnkutan awam di Kuala Lunmpur telah maju jauh ke hadapan.

Bukannya hendak menyamakan Kuching dan Kuala Lumpur,tetapi lebih kepada ingin menegaskan..perubahan masa dan zaman dapat ketara dilihat di sana manakala di sini,isu yang sama berulang ulang bertahun tahun lamanya.. Isu van sapu sekarang sudah mula berkurangan di mana piuhak kerajaan telah sedikit sebanyak membangunkan sistem pengangkutan dan infrastruktur yang berkaitan untuk kemudahan bersama.

Namun Bas Petra Jaya,masih ada dengan konsep ,rupa dan bentuk yang sama, masih belum mahu berubah? tidak mahu meningkatkan imej dan berubah ke arah yang lebih mesra penumpang dan jauh dari keselesaan.

Duduk di dalam bas ini seperti masuk ke mesin masa di mana suasana di dalam bas masih lagi seperti tahun 1980an tapi bila memandang ke luar tingkap,segalanya berbeza dari zaman 1980an di mana bandaraya Kuching sudah berubah dari pelbagai sudut dan arah namun bas Mesin Masa ini masih tetap sama..

Traditional Bidayuh Longhouse is open and conducive for a disciplined, communal way of life where honesty, discipline and deligence is automatically imposed on all inhabitants.
Unlike the Ibans, Bidayuh Longhouse actually consists of small longhouses (a few doors) or separate individual homes placed close together and are connected together by platforms of bamboo. Thus they are not that long, straight and level. Ours can be considered split-level, as we have to follow the contour of the land/hills.
Traditional Bidayuh houses are built using timber frames (post and beams), the wall are made of bark or flattened bamboo, the floor is made of section of split bamboo or flattened bamboo and the roofing is of 'attap' (palm-leaf thatch). Another unique thing about Bidayuh architecture, is the complete absent in the use of iron nails. We use a system of joints and the building materials are held in place with the use of special ropes/rattan.

Unfortunately, you can't find anymore Bidayuh Longhouse in Bau District. There might still be one or two in Penrissen, Pedawan or Serian area.

Bidayuh's Baruk house

Bidayuh's Baruk headhouse @ Kg Opar, Sarawak.

Some pronounce it as Baruk and others spell it as Barok.Both are same meaning and refer to Bidayuh people.

Baruk can be made into a model for a modern cool community hall. The Baruk structure capitalised on air convection as the principle for keeping the building cool. The other aspect is that it provide an atmosphere of equality in term of status when come to the seating arrangment.

In the old days, this is where the Bidayuh keep their enemies skulls.

'Mukah', a Bidayuh religious festival to appease the spirits of 'Tikurouk' (skulls of enemies) is held here. This is no longer practise because most Bidayuhs are now Christians.

Uses of the Baruk.

Used by the Pagans to practise the 'Adat Oma' and performing traditional dances.
In the olden days, a defensive point for the Bidayuh Village.
Used by all unmarried men and young boys of the village as their sleeping place. (Keep them out of mischief!).
Rest house for visitors. (Most of them must have had nightmare!).
A meeting place for the villagers/with Government Officials.
A venue for religious and cultural ceremonies.

Recently, water Taxi of Sarawak River launched in waterfront during Satok Fest (Satok fest in waterfront??) New concept modern in style and full with safety measure.Few months earlier ,there was a competition organised by SEDC (sarawak Economy Development Authority).Competition to public designing water taxi for Sarawak River.

There is a proposal to make a water taxi in Sarawak River similar to Gondola in Itali.The idea is in context of tourism where it reflect that Kuching is River city like in Milan..huhu..that's is so far away and European,that is their trademark.As a Kuchingite, i opposed this idea.We have our own pak Tambang and this is our Sarawak River Trademark.You think of Sarawak River,the other thing you think is Pak Tambang.So there is no connection between Gondola and Sarawak River.

Lun Bawang is a tribe in Sarawak. They are a component of the group of indigenous people collectively known as Orang Ulu.Although there are sub group of Borneo Dayaks. They can be found in the Limbang Division of Sarawak, as well as in the Interior Division of Sabah, Temburong District of Brunei, and in East Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Althougyh they are known as Lun Bawang in Sarawak, in Sabah they are called Lun Dayeh. Among themselves, they go by the names Lun Lod, Lun Baa and Lun Tana Luun. The different names give a clue as to where they settle. The name Lun Bawang means "people of the interior", Lud Lod means "people of the estuary" and Lun Dayeh means "people of the upriver". Construction of the advanced Fubuki-class destroyers was authorized as part of the Imperial Japanese Navy's expansion program from fiscal 1923, intended to give Japan a qualitative edge with the world's most modern ships.[3].

The Fubuki-class had performance that was a quantum leap over previous destroyer designs, so much so that they were designated Special Type destroyers (特型, Tokugata?). The large size, powerful engines, high speed, large radius of action and unprecedented armament gave these destroyers the firepower similar to many light cruisers in other navies. [4] Sagiri, built at the Uraga Dock Company was the sixth in an improved series, which incorporated a modified gun turret which could elevate her main battery of Type 3 127 mm 50 caliber naval guns to 75° as opposed to the original 40°, thus permitting the guns to be used as dual purpose guns against aircraft.[5] Sagiri was laid down on March 28, 1929, launched on December 23, 1929 and commissioned on January 31, 1930. Originally assigned hull designation “Destroyer No. 50”, she was commissioned as Sagiri. The 4th Fleet Incident occurred only a year after her commissioning, and Sagiri was quickly taken back to the shipyards for strengthening of her hull. [edit] Operational history On completion, Sagiri was assigned to Destroyer Division 20 under the IJN 2nd Fleet. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, from 1937, Sagiri covered landing of Japanese forces in Shanghai and Hangzhou. From 1940, she was assigned to patrol and cover landings of Japanese forces in south China. [edit] World War II history At the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Sagiri was assigned to Destroyer Division 20 of Desron 3 of the IJN 1st Fleet, and had deployed from Kure Naval District to the port of Samah on Hainan Island, escorting Japanese troopships for landing operations in the Japanese Invasion of Thailand covering landings at the port city of Songkhla in southern Thailand. From 17 December, Sagiri covered Japanese landings at Miri and at Kuching in Sarawak. On 24 December 1941, approximately 35 nautical miles (65 km) off Kuching, Sagiri was torpedoed by the Dutch submarine K XVI. Her aft magazine caught fire and exploded, sinking the ship at position 01°34′N 110°21′E / 1.567°N 110.35°E / 1.567; 110.35Coordinates: 01°34′N 110°21′E / 1.567°N 110.35°E / 1.567; 110.35 with the loss of 121 of her crew. [8] [9] Some 120 survivors were rescued by her sister ship, Shirakumo.

On 15 January 1942, Sagiri was removed from the navy list.[10]

Pada suatu masa dahulu, seorang gadis bernama Endu Saputong Kempat, adalah adik kepada Simpilang Gana yang dianggap salah seorang Dewa Dewi Iban. Saputong mengidap sejenis penyakit yang berbau busuk (kusta) dan mudah merebak.
Oleh yang demikian beliau telah diasingkan dari keluarga. Dia tinggal di dalam pondok di atas rakit. Pada suatu masa, dimusim tengkujuh, tali pengikat putus dan rakit pun hanyut ke laut.
Semasa di laut, ikan patin bongsu merasa kasihan kpd Saputong. Ikan patin tersebutlah yang berusaha membantu menyembuhkan penyakit Saputong.
Rakit tersebut terus hanyut sehingga suatu hari ianya tersangkut di pengkalan Hj Pati Melayu. Saputong dijemput oleh Hj Pati ke rumahnya.
Hj Pati amat tertarik dengan kecantikkan Saputong lalu memperisterikannya. Mereka dikurniakan beberapa orang anak dan mempunyai keturunan hingga sekarang.
Oleh yang demikian, keturunan Saputong Kempat dan Hj Pati Melayu tidak boleh memakan ikan patin.

Niabor

The niabor is a kind of parang (sword) used by the Iban people of Sarawak in Borneo. In contrast to the mandau, the parang of their neighbours the Kayan people, the niabor is more curved, with a broader tip so the centre of gravity lies nearer the point.

Unlike many Bornean weapons, the blade is not decorated and there are no hair decorations on the hilt or wooden sheath. The V-shaped hilt, designed to protect the knuckles, is of elaborately carved antler and bound in brass rings. There is an unusual projection on a blunt section on the underside of the blade called a kundieng, which serves as a finger protector.

Mandau is the Kayan term for the parang ilang (‘double knife’), the sword of the peoples of inland Borneo (Malaysian Sarawak and Indonesian Kalimantan). The name refers to the main sword and a smaller, secondary knife, known as a piso raout, stored on the back of the scabbard. Here, this secondary sheath is covered in red textile.

The mandau is a slashing weapon, historically used for headhunting but also as an everyday machete. It is worn edge-upwards on the left hip, almost horizontally in the Japanese fashion. This example is highly decorated: the blade is inlaid with brass studs and both the carved wooden hilt and sheath are covered in tufts and fringes of hair, much as Kayan shields were. The sheath also features beadwork tassels, carved bone panels and hornbill feathers.

A hybrid between the Parang Ilang and the Langgai Tinggang, the Jimpul originated in the second half of the 19th century. The blade has flat sides and is curved. It starts from the hilt with a 4 to 5 cm rectangular shoulder (tamporian), then widens to the point and ends in a slanting angle or a rounded tip. A groove crosses the blade just below the tamporian and runs along the back of the blade, it is terminated at both ends with hooks (krowit), probably to symbolize the dragon/dog Aso. The blade is rarely decorated, this example has brass inlaid lines and small dots run along the groove and the tamporian.

The hilt is carved from antler or wood, similar to the Parang Ilang.

The Penan People

The Penan are a nomadic aboriginal people living in Sarawak and Brunei. They are one of the last such peoples remaining.[1] The Penan are noted for their practice of 'molong' which means never taking more than necessary. Most Penan were nomadic hunter-gatherers until the post-World War II missionaries settled many of the Penan, mainly in the Ulu-Baram district but also in the Limbang district. They eat plants, which are also used as medicines, and animals and use the hides, skin, fur, and other parts for clothing and shelter.

Demographics
The Penan number around 10,000; only 200 are nomadic[2] The Penan can be broken down into two loosely related geographical groups known as either Eastern Penan or Western Penan, the Eastern Penan residing around the Miri, Baram, Limbang and Tutoh regions and the Western Penan in and around Belaga district.[3]

They can be considered as a native group or 'tribe' in their own right, with a language distinct from other neighbouring native groups such as the Kenyah, Kayan, Murut or Kelabit. However, in government censuses they are more broadly classified as Orang Ulu which translates as 'Upriver People' and which contains distinct neighbouring groups such as those above. Even more broadly they are included in the term 'Dayak', which includes all of Sarawak's indigenous people.

Lifestyle

Penan communities were predominantly nomadic up until the 1950s. The period from 1950-present has seen consistent programmes by the state government and foreign Christian missionaries to settle Penan into longhouse-based villages similar to those of Sarawak's other indigenous groups.[4] Some, typically the younger generations, now cultivate rice and garden vegetables but many rely on their diets of sago (starch from the sago palm), jungle fruits and their prey which usually include wild boar, barking deer, mouse deer but also snakes (especially the Reticulated Python or kermanen), monkeys, birds, frogs, monitor lizards, snails and even insects such as locusts.

Since they practice 'molong', they pose little strain on the forest: they rely on it and it supplies them with all they need. They are outstanding hunters and catch their prey using a 'lepud' or blowpipe, made from the Bilian Tree (superb timber) and carved out with unbelievable accuracy using a bone drill - the wood is not split, as it is elsewhere, so the bore has to be precise almost to the millimetre, even over a distance of 3 metres. The darts are made from the sago palm and tipped with poisonous latex of a tree found in the forest which can kill a human in a matter of minutes. Everything that is caught is shared as the Penan have a highly tolerant, generous and egalitarian society, so much so that it is said that the nomadic Penan have no word for 'thank you' because help is assumed and therefore doesn't require a 'thank you'. However, 'jian kinin' is typically used in the settled communities. Very few Penan live in Brunei any more, and their way of life is changing due to pressures that encourage them to live in permanent settlements and adopt year-around farming.

Penan resistance to deforestation in Sarawak

The Penan came to national and international attention when they resisted logging operations in their home territories of the Baram, Limbang, Tutoh and Lawas regions of Sarawak. Since both the settled, semi-nomadic and nomadic Penan communities were and are reliant on forest produce, they were hit hard by the large scale logging operations that encroached on their traditionally inhabited territories. The logging caused the pollution of their water catchment areas with sediment displacement, the loss of many sago palms that form the staple carbohydrate of Penan diet, scarcity of wild boar, deer and other game, scarcity of fruit trees and plants used for traditional forest medicine, destruction of their burial sites and loss of rattan and other forest products. Beginning in the late 1980s and continuing today the Penan and other indigenous communities such as the Iban, Kelabit and Kayan (collectively referred to as Dayak) have set up blockades in an attempt to halt logging operations on their land. These succeeded in many areas but the efforts were hard to sustain and ended in large scale clashes between the indigenous communities and the state backed logging companies, supported by the police and Malaysian army. The confrontations ended with several deaths, many injuries and large scale arrests of indigenous people. Many of the detained reported being beaten and humiliated while in custody. An independent Sarawakian organisation IDEAL documented such claims in a 2001 fact finding mission entitled "Not Development, but Theft".[6] The Penan explicitly outlined their wants and requirements to the Sarawak State Government of Abdul Taib Mahmud in the 2002 Long Sayan Declaration.[7] The confrontation between the Penan and Sarawak State Government has continued to the present day. Most recently the blockade setup by the Penan community of Long Benali was forcefully dismantled on 4 April 2007 by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), with support from a special police force unit and overlooked by Samling Corporation employees. Samling Corporation had been granted a logging concession by the Malaysian Timber Certificate Council (MTCC) that included land traditionally inhabited

by the Penan of Long Benali and despite their continued petitions against the concession.

Bruno Manser

Bruno Manser was an environmental activist and champion of the Penan's plight during their struggle in the 1990s. Named lakei Penan (Penan man) by the Penan, he helped communicate the Penan's cause to the outside world, firstly writing letters to Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud and later leaving Sarawak to educate the outside world (especially timber importing countries in Europe and Japan) about the deforestation and related social problems in Sarawak. He later conducted public awareness stunts such as paragliding onto the lawn of Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud and attempting a hunger strike outside the offices of Japanese shipping companies in Tokyo.

In 2000, Manser went missing when he secretly returned to Sarawak to reunite with a Penan group, his body and belongings have never been found despite intensive searches. Theories of assassination by the Sarawak government or logging companies have sprung up (due to a reputed US$40,000 bounty on his head). Other rumors include those of suicide after years of unsuccessful campaigning or getting lost in the dense mossy forests around Bukit Batu Lawi in the Kelabit Highlands, close to the border with Kalimantan. However, Manser had lived for several years in the region with the nomadic Penan and was thus highly experienced.

The future of the Penan

The future of the Penan has been a controversial subject since the confrontation between indigenous rights and state land use began. National and International Non-Governmental Organisations have been pressing for indigenous self-determination and respect for Penan human and land rights in accordance with UN International Labour Organisation Convention N. 169 (1989) that removes “assimilationist” orientated international standards towards indigenous rights,[12] a convention that Malaysia has not adopted. However, many Malaysian politicians have criticised NGOs for meddling in Malaysian domestic affairs and have accused them of attempting to inhibit development projects and keep the Penan 'undeveloped' and unassimilated into mainstream Malaysian society. Most see the Penan's lifestyle as uncivilised and antiquated (compare White man's burden), an example of this is a regularly recited poem by ex Minister for Environment and Tourism Datuk James Wong

Many Malaysian organisations have joined the debate such as Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM), Borneo Resource Institute (BRIMAS) and Rengah Sarawak. These grassroots organisations have supported indigenous rights and accused the Sarawak state government of repeated neglect of Sarwak's indigenous citizens and exploitation of Sarawak's natural resources. The opposition party Parti Keadilan Rakyat has also taken up the cause of the indigenous people's plight, claiming that they are "living lives of quiet desperation that now and then flares up in action that invites police attention, not to mention the notice of the rest of Malaysians who don't quite know what it is to be under the tyranny of geography."[14] With the help of such NGOs many Penan communities have mapped their proposed ancestral lands and filed claims in Sarawak's courts in the hope of preventing and deterring illegal logging of their forests. An important precedent was set in 2001 when an Iban village of Rumah Nor won a landmark court victory against Borneo Pulp and Paper and the Sarawak Government for violating their Native Customary Right (NCR) or adat. The victory was recently publicised in a short documentary - Rumah Nor - by the Borneo Project. The verdict is being threatened by a Federal Court appeal by the State Government and Borneo Pulp and Paper. However, 19 Penan communities have now mapped their NCR and four are beginning litigation and in others the logging has more or less stopped in the territory where litigation is pending. Indigenous action has therefore shifted from the human blockades of logging roads to empowerment through the political and legal system and international publicity.

Penan language

The Penan language belongs to the Malayo-Polynesian branch of the Austronesian language family. It forms an own Group within the Borneo branch of the Borneo-Philippines languages. It may be somewhat related to the Kenyah Languages and might show some evidence of a non Austronesian substrat that might be related to Orang Asli type of language.[15] The Penan language is linguistically interesting since it has six words for varying levels of "we" depending on how extensive the described group in the society is at the same time as having no word to say "thank you" or describe the status of a domestic animal. This provides a good example in discussion of the subject-object problem in philosophy and its relation to language and power.
